Anyone have any tips on smoothing out a surface chip on a windshield?
It's not cracked but it looks white on the window and it's rough to the touch

Do you have full coverage insurance with glass coverage? Most policies cover glass even if it’s not broken. They don’t want the possible liability of impaired vision due to glare caused by chipped or highway pepple rash on the glass, and are normally willing to replace a windshield from it.

I do have full glass coverage but I'm not keen on the idea of having the windshield pulled. I just had my gmc's windshield replaced. The safelite guy seemed more concerned with how fast he could do the job than being careful.

Not to mention the use of aftermarket glass.

I have gotten windshield replaced and insisted on OEM glass. Small dealer are more agreeable to this than the big guys that advertise. Some companies can even repair the chip. They sell chip repair kits at the parts store. I have one sitting in the garage for the chip in my VW windshield. I have no idea how well they work however.

I've had chip repair done by a glass shop in the past. They fill it with a resin, not 100% invisible but good enough that you won't see it unless to get up close to look for it.

You dont have to accept aftermarket glass ever. You have the right to oem when insurance is replacing it.

I'd look around for a place that does chip repair. They may be able to polish it out if it's very superficial or just use the epoxy filler.

You can specify OEM. I did. But still don't like having it done.

I got a rock-nick 1st week I had my hellcat. I have full glass replacement, but I've heard bad things about pulling OEM glass in these cars and generally learned that if you don't absolutely have to, you shouldnt.
anyway, the chip was small, so I utilized the deluxe permatex kit (sold at napa) Its basically the same resin the shops use, comes with the suction/pressure/vacuum device, film, etc. uses UV to cure, so you'll need a good warm sunny day or UV device/lamp. I also ran the car with max windshield defrost to get the glass nice and warm. - from the inside.
Its held up fine for a year now and made it about 50% less visible to the eye and is supposed to help keep it from crawling. I did practice on a similar rock chip on my daily driver 1st.
It maybe worth a shot for you.

Has to be OEM. Gotta have the little Challenger outline in the lower left.

I'll take a look at doing that. It's a surface chip. No cracking. It's just visible as a white color looking spot.
Thanks
