...and under the valve covers doesn't look much better. This was a really risky buy at a million dollars, because the it's basically a $950k "story" that has been questioned on some its proclaimed importance. The car itself is obviously super rare, and worthy of a six-figure resto. Kind of sticky situation that I wouldn't my million tied up in.

It's a 50 year old unrestored car, I wouldn't expect anything else. Paid for the story;)
If it's even true

Not sure about this. Heard it was over exaggerated to create hype to raise the price when they sold the car
The movie rights were sold for this. The story has been proven to be bullshit.

I think I told you about the guy that approached me at a car show and asked how fast my old 2009 Challenger ran. Hood was up and you could obviously see the supercharger. I told him 10.90s at about 132MPH and he laughed and told me his bone stock 1970 Challenger ran 10s and "didn't need no supercharger to do it". He had his teenage kid with him so I tried to just laugh it off but he was super obnoxious about it. Finally I told him to go get his 14 second car and lets line up out front for tittles. He just mumbled and trailed off.
I had a 1970 R/T challenger that I bought new with 440 six pack four speed and 410s and the best it ever ran was 12.96 at Salem,Ohio, Quaker City Dragway. Never lost a street race with it. That guy must have had the fastest challenger in the country. LOL.

I saw a couple pics on FB, supposedly showing the inside of the hemi. It looked like it sat in a lake.

That's awesome that you enjoyed and were able to buy new that 440/6. Did you order it?

Yes. Ordered it in Sept. of 69’ and it took 13 weeks to arrive because Holley carburetor factory was on strike and Dodge couldn’t get the tri-power. Go Mango with black vinyl top. No power steering or power brakes and without power brakes the steepest gears I could order were 3:55 so had to buy the 4:10 srparately. Bought from Paul Jones Dodge in McKeesport, Pa.

I put down at least (3) stock Hemi car’s with my 13.2@106 mph (7” slicks), 4 speed 383 RoadRunner on the track and on the street back in 1970-72. It ran 13.9’s with G-70x14 belted tires and a 4.30 rear. That was very quick back then for a street machine. Mostly ran 1/8th mile on the street and the race was over before the higher HP cars stopped spinning and started to catch up. Lot’s of memories…440-6’s, 428 SCJ mustangs and LS-6’s were definitely out of my league but I never ran into a super quick Hemi in the street. The serious Hemi guys probably didn’t want to come out and play! Like any big block back in the day, you needed sticky tires to get a hole shot and even with L-60x15’s, you could not get any traction with 500 ft lbs of torque. The only sticky tire you could get back then were drag slicks and I wasn’t going to run any big block running slicks on the street. A lot of Hemi’s just had 3.23’s and barely ran 14.0 or high 13’s. With a Hemi, you needed the super track pack, some distributor and carb tweaks and a lot of experience to be competitive on the street.

The torque of the 440 and 383 big blocks back then ate a lot of cars on the street. By the time the other machines came on it was over. I raced a 69’ 383 high performance Dart and it was consistently 12.98-13:10 at 107-112 running 7 inch slicks. Just a little spring work on the distributor and some timing tweak. The hemis came on at the top end but couldn’t run the eighth with the 383 or 440.

Believe it or not I bought the Dart off the showroom floor. Headers, slicks and some tweaks and I was in business.
