I have heard Dodge specifically went with the slightly lower displacement for the Hellcat (6.2) because of issues with the stock 392 and Forced Air? Is it safe to put a boost on the 392?

Smarter folks here will give you a better answer, but it’s my understanding that the piston ring lands on the 6.4 can’t handle much more than 6 pounds of boost reliably.

If you’re serious about it, I’d first drop in a set of forged pistons and proper ring gap due to reasons mentioned above. The stock crank is already forged. I know people say “I’m going to hold it to 6lbs of boost” but I’d rather have the peace of mind to know I could go more if desired or by mistake.

Well, it can be done with spending a bunch of money to make the engine stronger and other parts.Just like @MiHiHemi posted. .

I would say don't do it.
I've seen many 392's blow up. I've also see some good builds with a Procharger.$$$$$$
The problem I think may be caused by the more need for speed.;)

No. U need a piston and rod combo to start with..... And a shit load of other things including an upgraded transmission and a fuel system. Like Linda stated ull wanna go faster and ull melt shit in the process.

Considering the car is heavy AF ur gonna need to make Hellcat like hp and a stock HC gets pretty boring pretty fast TBH......

And, when ur done spending enough money to make it faster u could have bought a Hellcat. Ur 392 isnt worth any more money than it was stock now. In fact, probably worth less so in short its a really Dumb idea!

I'm no expert on boost other than I like it, I like it a lot!
But...I've been told by many it's better to boost a 5.7L over a 6.4L
Is that the case??

it's safer to boost a stock 5.7 than a stock 6.4 .( to a point obviously ) the stock pistons are the same material but the ring pack on the 6.4 is higher on the piston leaving a thinner crown that won't accept much heat before failure. I have a stock 5.7 and a piston/rod 6.4 that are both on boost. the 5.7 sees 6 or so PSI and makes a bit over 500 whp. .I know of a stock bottom end 5.7 thats never been apart on E85 making 12-13 PSI that traps 135-136 that just won't die..it does have over 150,000 mi on it so that explains a bit..I never considered boosting my 6.4 with stock pistons as I've seen way too many failures on 6.4 cars with 6-8 PSI that were supposed to be safe. it's cheaper to build it right the first time rather than fix the damage and then have to build it anyway.

Good information, thinking about boost on my 5.7 Ram after I get done with current repairs (lost a lifter, cam) and upgrades!

I’ve tuned a fair amount of boosted 392s. They handle the 6psi. Start running into issues when really turning them up. Everyone has different goals and budgets. First conversation has to be what is the goal

The prime reason Dodge went with the 6.2 (which is really a BGE block shared from the 392 with a 5.7 crank) is to maximize crank journal overlap, which adds a lot of inherent strength in the rod layout. A 6.4 or 5.7 boosted is not going to have this level of internal strength. Thus, you'll get people who say, "It's fine, I've had no problems," and others who will say, "Don't do it, mine blew up." With a piston/rod swap you can solve the 392's ring land issue, but you won't solve for the crank journal overlap. Thus, even the best built engine is going to be built with an architectural weakness.

The best, cheapest and safest method to boost a 392 is to visit your local Dodge dealer and trade it in for a Hellcat. The best part is, it also comes with a factory warranty.

...and if I had a dollar for everyone with a modded 392 that claims it can take out a Hellcat now or it makes more power than a Hellcat, well when the rubber meets the road and they are on the drag strip, something funny happens and they do not go faster than a Hellcat. I would be a millionaire! So there is that...

Build the engine and it will make well over 1000whp.

Some say the drop in rods/pistons are good for 4 digit HP levels.
All depends on what you want to do. Stock HP in a hellcat is already borderline silly on the street

Before I bought my 'Cat I did a fair amount of digging into adding a SC to a 392 car. I really wanted that shaker hood ;)
Pretty much every road lead to upgrading the internals if you really wanted to make it 'safe & reliable' and even then you needed to be conservative with the tune/boost. Procharger seemed to be the preferred build (actually the only choice if you wanted to keep the shaker hood).

So, can it be done - yes, but it will not be a cheap project and you will need to be conservative with the boost/tune.

I initially looked at the SP, $35k stripped in 2020. I liked the idea of the HC but it was about $18k more. I really thought hard about paying $18k just for a blower. In retrospect, I cannot express how happy I am that I went for the HC over the SP!!!

Hellcats were not $53,000 in 2020.

Hellcats were not $53,000 in 2020.
2020:
Base: $58,995
Dest: $1495
T: $60,490
PD: -$7170
Net: $53,320

From what I understand, many guys received dealer discounts and paid way less.
